Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”
Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” has been the national foremost centre for university education and research in fundamental theoretical and applied areas since 1888. Today it is the largest university in the country with 88 degree programs offered by 16 faculties. The Faculty of Philosophy is one of the biggest faculties with full BA, MA and Doctoral Programs in 8 subjects among which Sociology, European Studies and Cultural Studies. The academic staff includes a significant part of the best specialists in the humanities and social sciences.
It has been one of the centres of the Bulgarian humanitarian science ever since the establishment of Sofia University. The number of its students, the qualifications of its teaching and research staff, the quality of its libraries, technical and information facilities make it one of the biggest scientific centres in South-East Europe in the field of social and humanitarian studies.
More than highly qualified professors, associate professors and assistant professors teach about 3000 students from 25 countries in the three degrees of higher education – bachelor, master and doctor. The Faculty’s teaching and administrative staff as well as its students have devoted themselves to the mission of studying, researching into, developing and passing on human experience in the humanitarian, social and political sphere on the basis of a high-level research and applied studies.
Within the Faculty, functions the European Studies Department, which is the first of its kind in the country and for more than 15 years now has been the leader in training experts in the field of European integration and the full range of European studies. Three Master Programmes are taught at the Department. It is accredited for PhD studies and has more than 20 doctorate students working on EU related subjects. Since 2012 the Department has benefited from the work of Jean Monnet Chair in the name of Maria Stoicheva.
